Megilla Co. ("Megilla," "we," "us") helps families record a loved one's life story on video and turn it into a documentary film. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It applies to megilla.com, app.megilla.com, and the text messages and emails we send.
Information we collect
Information you give us: your name, email address, and phone number; information about the person whose story is being told (such as their name, phone number, birth year, hometown, and background) that you choose to share so we can tailor their interview questions; and the names and phone numbers of family and friends you invite to contribute questions.
Recordings and answers: video, audio, and written answers recorded by the storyteller and by contributors, plus transcripts and captions made from them.
Payment information: payments are processed by Stripe. We receive confirmation of your purchase but never see or store your full card number.
Technical information: basic information such as browser type, device type, and pages visited, collected by our website and app hosts to keep the service working and secure.
How we use your information
To set up and run your family's Megilla gift, including suggesting interview questions
To send service messages by text and email, such as sign-in links, reminders, progress updates, and notice that your film is ready
To transcribe, caption, edit, and deliver your documentary film
To respond to your questions and invite requests
To keep the service secure and improve how it works
We use artificial intelligence tools to help suggest interview questions from information you provide, and to transcribe, caption, and edit recordings. Every Megilla film is reviewed by a person before it is delivered.
Text messages
We use mobile phone numbers only to send messages about your Megilla gift, and only to people who agree to receive them. Invitations to storytellers and contributors are sent personally by the gifter from their own phone, not by Megilla. Message frequency may vary. Message and data rates may apply. No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Text messaging opt-in data and consent will not be shared with any third parties. The only exception is the messaging provider we use to deliver our own texts to you.
How we share information
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.
We share information only with service providers that help us run Megilla, and only as needed to provide the service:
Hosting and storage: Heroku and Amazon Web Services
Video processing, hosting, and streaming: Mux and Vimeo
Transcription: Amazon Web Services
Question suggestions: Anthropic
Film editing: Descript, and the human editors who work on Megilla films under confidentiality obligations
Text messages and email: Twilio and SendGrid
Website and forms: Squarespace
Payments: Stripe
Business email and documents: Google Workspace
We may also share information if required by law, to protect someone's safety, or as part of a sale or merger of our business, in which case this policy would continue to apply to your information.
Your recordings are private
Recordings and finished films are private by default. We share them only with the gifter and the people your family chooses. We never use your recordings in advertising or marketing without your separate written permission.
How long we keep information
We keep your information for as long as needed to provide the service. You can download your finished film to keep forever. We stream it on your private page for at least 12 months; after that we may move it to secure archive storage and restore it on request. You can ask us to delete your information or recordings at any time.
Your choices
Texts: reply STOP to any message.
Email: use the unsubscribe link in any marketing email.
Access, correction, and deletion: email help@megilla.com. We respond within 30 days. Please download your film before requesting deletion, because deleted recordings cannot be recovered.
Children
Megilla accounts and phone numbers are for adults 18 and older. Children may appear in recordings only when a parent or legal guardian records and submits the video from the parent's own device and consents on the child's behalf. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13. A parent or guardian may ask us to delete a recording that includes their child at any time by emailing help@megilla.com.
Security
We use reasonable safeguards, including encrypted connections and access limited to people who need it to make your film. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
California residents and Do Not Track
We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law. Our website does not currently respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy, we will post the new version here with a new date. For significant changes, we will notify you by email or text.
